- 1904
SLATER MENSWEAR FOUNDED
Slater Menswear was founded by Samuel Slater, originally from Russia, he made his home in Glasgow in 1904. The business started life as a tailors shop and grew and diversified over the years, as his sons came of age and joined the family business.
- 1937
A RISE FROM THE ASHES
In 1973 the company was devastated by a huge fire, at the age of 55 Samuel's son Ralph had to take the brave step to start the business from scratch. This was when the company took its first steps into retail.
- LATE ‘70S
Slater Menswear founded
With the success of their retail side the choice was made to fully move away from the manufacturing side and devote the business to retail only.
- 1984
Ayr we go
Saw further expansion with the opening of our store in Ayr.
- 1988
A store for Mancheter
Closely followed by introduction of Manchester in 1988.
- ‘90S
The expansion
Continued & frequent expansion followed throughout the next few years building up to an impressive 23 stores which are now thriving across the UK.

INTRODUCING THE EXCLUSIVE ONLY RALPH’S ROOM
The concept of Ralphs Room was introduced. As a homage to the great man, this is a very special section located in every Slater Menswear store which contains the most exclusive and premium suits.

Glasgow grows
Glasgow head office is a hub of much activity and houses the growth of its many internal departments in which they devote specific teams to the less visible aspects of the company such as Merchandising, Administration, Buying, Alterations, Marketing and Ecommerce.

Expansion in to Bristol and Brighton
Has welcomed the newest additions of our tremendous Bristol and Bromley stores, bringing the tally up to a fantastic 25 branches.

PRESENT DAY
The company is currently in the very safe hands of managing director Paul Slater, (son of Ralph), closely supported by his sister Susan who oversees the online and marketing operations. With around 800 employees, Slater Menswear is a metropolitan mixture of many characters. Women and men of all ages and backgrounds create the vibrant team that makes Slater Menswear the UK’s favourite menswear retailer. We opened our Chelmsford store in 2018 and now have 26 stores across the country and a brand new website, you can shop with ease and confidence any time of the day or night.
